ABOUT XF

In a nutshell, X-Press Files (formerly called X-Pat Files until the official change of blog name in January 2008) is the personal site of Jayred, a 30-something salbutamol-dependent Filipino journalist who finds blogging highly therapeutic. It mainly features her online tales, thoughts, and observations as a semi-bohemian resident of Switzerland. From time to time, depending on life circumstances and blogging mood, the blogsite dishes out stories that are not Swiss-related.

An old blog description on Blogspot reads: “X-Pat Files is a free-wheeling contemplation on the joys and pains of living in Switzerland as a Filipino expatriate.”

Blog posts here are based on Jayred’s personal experiences and observations, delving on how things in her life — both the major and the mundane — came to be.

Newspaper columnist/professional blogger Connie Veneracion of PinoyBlog.com has this to say about X-Pat Files:

You haven’t read a real About Me page until you’ve read Jayred’s. It’s endearing, hilarious, informative. Well, the author isn’t a former journalist for nothing. She has ‘retired’ since her move to Switzerland but she does take on jobs. It would appear, however, that she has a penchant for non-paying jobs. Or, maybe, the non-paying jobs go looking for her. Whichever the case, Jayred is happy. She maintains six blogs which chronicles her varied interests. Among the six, it is the X-Pat Files that tells about her life as a Filipina married to a Swiss and living in a country where the language still bewilders her at times. A self-proclaimed antithesis of a fashionista, one wonders whether shrinking and discoloring clothes illustrates her unique sense of fashion. She does have a thing about maintaining her hair though and there’s a related blog entry that tells about how basic good grooming can lead to bankruptcy in Switzerland if a woman starts treating the beauty parlor as a place to kill time. Wer wissen will, wie die Schweiz aus filippinischer Sicht aussieht, der lese die X-Pat Files: Online Chronicles of a Filipino expat in Switzerland. Da wird (durchwegs nett, aber durchaus auch mit leicht verständlicher Verwunderung) über Schweizer Eigenheiten wie z.B. das ganze Müllwesen mit offiziellen Müllsäcken, Bussen für wildes Deponieren etc. geschrieben, oder über die exorbitanten Handy-Tarife. Und interessant sind dann auch die Kommentare der LeserInnen aus dem In- und Ausland.

Ueberhaupt finde ich die Blogs der AusländerInnen in der Schweiz immer sehr interessant; was man da so alles über die Schweiz lernt ist lehrreich, bedenkenswert, und auch recht lustig :-) .

Umgekehrt erfährt man natürlich aus den Blogs der SchweizerInnen im Ausland, wie es sich so in der grossen weiten Welt lebt. Reisetagebücherblogs, sozusagen. (13 March 2006)

    Matthias gibt einen Lesetipp, den ich hier gern weitergebe: Expat-Blogs. Von einer Filippina erhalten wir in den X-Pat-Files eine Liste der Dinge, die er auf den Philippinen definitiv nicht vermissen wird. Ãœberraschender Platz Nr. 20: Micheline Calmy-Reys Frisur. Nicht auf seiner Expat-Liste ist dann das Blog jenes Deutschen, der sich auch nach fünf Jahren hier in der Schweiz noch darüber wundern kann, wie oft sich der Schweizer Wortschatz aus dem Militärtornister bedient - die Blogwiese. Lesenswert. Alles.

    Nachtrag: Ich habe jetzt auch die Happy List mit den «101 Things to be happy about while in Switzerland» der filippinischen Expat gefunden, und auch hier steht Bemerkenswertes, gerade für Berner Gewerbler: Bei Platz Nummer 74 («Excellent Customer Service at Loeb») und Platz 76 («Shopping arcades in Bern») dürften deren Herzen höher schlagen, bei Platz 77 könnten möglicherweise einige stehen bleiben: «Art graffitis on walls»… (15 March 2006)
